In the bastide town of Saint-Aulaye, founded in 1288, situated to the west of Périgord Vert, and close to neighbouring Charente, you can see its ramparts, its château, its Romanesque Church dating from the 11th century and its cobbled streets. During the summer you can discover the banks of the River Dronne with its beach, its water park and its treetop adventure park. You can also roam through the legendary Fôret de la Double, by following its footpaths. Every Saturday morning there is a farmers’ market which livens up the town centre with its friendly atmosphere.
Visits: The Bastide discovery circuit. Guided visits in summer; Musée du Cognac and Musée du Pastel (international collection of pastel paintings) open in July and August and by appointment out of season.
Events: Fireworks and dancing July 14; nocturnal market “wine, cognac and good food”, August 11; Salon International du Pastel July 28-August 26.
